Astorga Free Walking Tour
Description
Discover the Roman remnants, medieval architecture, and the modernist creations of Gaudí on this engaging walking tour through the charming streets of Astorga, located in the Castilla y León region!
Tour Details
Join us at the specified time in Plaza Eduardo de Castro, right in front of the Palace designed by Gaudí, where our walking tour of Astorga will commence. Are you ready to uncover an intriguing aspect of the province of León? Let’s begin!
As we stroll through the historical pathways, we will delve into the inspirations behind Gaudí's palace and uncover a wealth of stories. Only a short distance away, the striking baroque façade of the Santa María Cathedral awaits, a significant landmark for those traveling on the Camino de Santiago.
Our journey will then take us to Plaza Santocildes, a historically rich square, before we proceed to Plaza España, the vibrant center of the city. Here, we’ll explore the intricate symbolism embedded in the Town Hall’s façade, and if the timing is right, we may be fortunate enough to hear the ringing of the famous bells of Juan Zancuda and Colasa.
Continuing our exploration, we will follow the remnants of the ancient city walls to the Shrine of Fátima, an exceptional example of architecture from the Roman period within the city. Following this, we will visit the Sinagoga Garden, a tranquil haven along the old city wall, allowing us a moment to appreciate the beauty of Astorga.
Our path leads us to admire one of the city’s best-preserved Roman ruins. We will be captivated by the stunning Domus mosaic depicting a bear and birds, once part of an opulent residence belonging to an influential Roman family.
In conclusion, we will return to Plaza España, culminating our tour approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes after we began.
