As you glide along the canals, our guide will share fascinating details about the two primary boat types navigating these waters—the moliceiro and the mercantile vessel—along with their respective histories.

Throughout this journey on the moliceiro, you will encounter some of Aveiro's most iconic landmarks, including the striking Art Nouveau architecture adorning the canal banks, the notable Aveiro salt pans, the traditional fishing district, the Jerónimo P. Types of Boats

Depending on boat availability, your journey could involve both a moliceiro and a mercantel. Each of these boats is emblematic of the city.

The moliceiro is a historic riverboat from Ria de Aveiro, resembling a gondola from Venice. Its name derives from its original function of gathering and transporting moliço, a type of seaweed found in the area used as fertilizer.

Conversely, the mercantel was employed to transport sand and mud necessary for the salt pans. These vessels are larger than moliceiros and feature more understated decor.
