The Wall Museum: A Tribute to the East Side Gallery
Berlin is home to numerous institutions and memorials that reflect on the Berlin Wall. Portions of this historical division, which separated the city from 1961 to 1989, can still be observed today. Among the most renowned sections is the East Side Gallery, adorned with vibrant murals and street art that are accessible for viewing at any time.
Adjacent to this gallery lies The Wall Museum, regarded as a key repository of knowledge concerning the Berlin Wall. The museum’s various exhibits provide visitors with an in-depth understanding of this significant emblem of the Cold War.
Situated in the historic building known as Mühlenspeicher, once part of the infamous "death strip," this visit allows you to delve into the timeline of the Berlin Wall, chronicling its inception in 1961 through to its collapse in 1989. This journey unfolds over 13 multimedia exhibition rooms.
The displayed items include a variety of original artifacts from the GDR, known as the German Democratic Republic. This socialist regime, or East Germany, dissolved in 1990 when it unified with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). During its existence, this region witnessed numerous hardships that are explored throughout your museum experience.
The exhibits provide insights into life in a divided Berlin and the realities of the GDR. You'll also uncover personal accounts from those who endeavored to flee from the eastern sector to the west.
Moreover, from within the museum, you can enjoy views of the Spree River and the historic Oberbaum Bridge, which once functioned as a checkpoint during the Cold War.

The Wall Museum welcomes visitors daily from 10 am to 7 pm, with the last entry permitted until 6 pm.
