Rupestrian Churches Matera Park Tour
Your adventure begins as you meet your guide at Via Alessando Volta, right in the center of Matera, ready to embark on an exploration of the national park, known as Murgia Materana, or the Park of Rock Churches.
Upon entering this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll visit the archaeological remnants of a Neolithic settlement, delving into the lives of the region's ancient inhabitants, primarily shepherds and hunters. You'll have the chance to observe the ruins of ancient farms, the “jazzo” sheep pens, along with water tanks and wells that have stood the test of time.
Continuing your exploration, you'll come across the renowned 150 Rupestrian churches that define the Murgia Materana Park. Primarily constructed during the Middle Ages, these sacred sites exemplify the profound historical importance of religion in this southern Italian area.
First on your itinerary is the Church of San Falcione, recognized as one of the earliest cave churches in Matera. This Rupestrian temple is notable for its complete rock-carving and the 9th-century frescoes that adorn its inner walls.
Your journey continues at the Church of Madonna delle Tre Porte, where the knowledgeable English-speaking guide will share insights into the significant historical value of its walls.
The tour concludes at a viewpoint famously used by Mel Gibson to film the crucifixion scene in The Passion of the Christ, as this region bears a resemblance to Jerusalem. Seize the moment to capture a stunning panoramic photo of the historic center of Matera before returning to the city by bus after this enlightening journey.
