Description

Explore the prehistoric cave houses and rock churches of Matera, recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2019. This guided experience takes you through one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited locations.

Private Tour of Matera

Your adventure begins at the time of your choice in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a square that's been part of the city since 1880. Here, your guide will welcome you to start a walking tour through the iconic sites of Matera. Over the course of two hours, you will delve into the rich history of this captivating city in southern Italy.

As you wander, take in the breathtaking views of the Sassi, the ancient cave dwellings that define Matera. This area, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts stone-carved homes that have been occupied since prehistoric eras, making them among Italy's earliest human settlements.

Continuing your journey through the main thoroughfares of Matera, you will likely recognize the striking golden-stone architecture, which has drawn comparisons to Jerusalem. This unique landscape has also served as a backdrop for numerous films, such as Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, as well as the recent Wonder Woman.

During the tour, you will pass the Matera Cathedral, a remarkable example of 13th-century Apulian Romanesque architecture, located at the highest point of the city. From there, you will get to visit a selection of the Sassi that have made Matera famous, allowing you to uncover the fascinating history surrounding these cave dwellings.

Your journey culminates at one of Matera's four cave churches, known as Rupestrian churches: the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate. Here, you will encounter the ancient cave paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings, offering a window into the past.
