At the designated hour, we'll gather at Rua do Dr Ferreira da Silva in Oporto and set off towards Amarante, a delightful city renowned for its vast artistic, cultural, and architectural significance that is bound to captivate you. Let's begin our adventure!
Situated 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Porto, Amarante is nestled in the stunning Serra do Marão, overlooking the Tâmega River, the longest tributary of the Douro. As we arrive, the breathtaking views from the city's lookout will set the perfect tone for our exploration of this charming Portuguese locale.
Stroll through the streets lined with quaint houses flanking the riverbanks. We will delve into the inspiring story of the locals in Amarante during the early 19th century, who bravely defended their town against Napoleon's invading forces.
Two unmissable highlights in Amarante are the Monastery and Bridge of São Gonçalo. Interestingly, both landmarks share their namesake! We will uncover the deep reverence the city has for this saint.
