Potosi Mines Tour + Thuru Museum
Description
This exploration of the Potosí mines from the outside is an excellent choice for those interested in understanding these historic sites without descending into the depths below. The tour also includes a visit to the Thuru Museum of Mineralogy.
Potosí Mines Exploration + Thuru Museum
We will convene at the agreed-upon time in front of the Casa de la Moneda to commence our exterior tour of the Potosí mining area. This experience is particularly suited for individuals who wish to uncover the history and functioning of the mines while remaining above ground!
Initially, we will explore the mining market, gaining insight into the various products utilized in the mines, including essential items like nitroglycerine. Following this, our journey will take us to a chemical laboratory, where minerals are processed. We will then ascend to a viewpoint, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Potosí.
Next, we will observe the exterior of the Candelaria and Rosario mines, whilst discussing the significance of these sites since the colonial era. It’s fascinating to note that 80% of the world's silver is sourced from this mountain, aptly named Cerro Rico, which translates to 'Rich Mountain'—a fitting title indeed!
The final segment of our itinerary includes a visit to the Thuru Museum, named after a traditional device that has been utilized for mining refinement since colonial days. After exploring this historic artifact, we will proceed to the exhibition halls to appreciate collections of minerals and examples of mining tools from colonial times.
In conclusion, we will return to Potosí approximately three to four hours after we set out.
