Activity Details
If you enjoy savoring local culture via culinary endeavors, this Swahili cooking workshop is a must-try. At the designated hour, we will collect you from your accommodation and set off towards a spice plantation—the perfect introduction to your culinary journey!
Upon our arrival at the plantation, we will explore the various crops that are regularly harvested to generate some of the island’s most cherished spices, which are revered globally. During our visit, you'll discover how natural flavorings like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom are cultivated—prepare for an aromatic delight!
After gaining insight into the historical and cultural significance of these spices in Zanzibar, we will proceed to the cooking school for our Swahili workshop. Many of the spices we've encountered will feature prominently in our recipes! As we arrive at the venue, the secrets of our upcoming culinary creations will be unveiled.
With guidance from expert chefs in Swahili cuisine, we will dive into our cooking activities. As we interact with the fresh ingredients, you'll acquire techniques unique to Zanzibar’s culinary landscape. The class will include the preparation of the following dishes:
- Pilau: a fragrant rice dish infused with spices
- Samaki wa Kupaka: spicy, marinated fish grilled to perfection
- Mshikaki: skewers of meat or fish accompanied by a zesty sauce
- Kachumbari: a fresh salad made with tomatoes and onions
Once we've prepared our dishes, we will gather around the table to savor the delicious results of our efforts—the moment we've all been waiting for!
At the conclusion of this memorable experience, we will return you to your hotel, bidding you farewell after approximately 5 hours together.
