Descripción

Reasons to Explore the Baeza Cathedral
Situated within the historic center of Baeza, one of the 15 Spanish cities designated as a World Heritage Site, the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin stands as a significant emblem of Renaissance architecture in Jaén province.
Your journey begins with the entry through the Puerta de la Luna (Moon Gate), marking the entrance to the earlier mosque that once occupied the site. Crossing this entrance leads you into the Capilla Dorada (Golden Chapel), the cathedral's most pivotal chapel, where the tour is articulated via the audio guide.
As the exploration proceeds, you'll traverse the cloister, which ushers you into the Museo Catedralicio. Here, you can appreciate intricate goldsmithing treasures crafted in Toledo’s Molero workshops, with a highlighted exhibit being the Piedad, created from polychrome alabaster. Moreover, the museum houses an array of exquisitely carved panels that are credited to the school of Juan de Juni.
During your visit to Andalusia’s oldest cathedral, you will explore the nave de la Epístola (nave of the Epistle), showcasing pivotal artworks, including San José by Juan de Frías and Escalante and Sagrada Familia by Juan de Valdés Leal. The setting also features a striking Baroque altarpiece. In the adjoining nave del Evangelio (nave of the Gospel), significant chapels can be found, such as the San Miguel Chapel and the Arcedianos Chapel.
Among the cathedral's prized possessions is the processional monstrance, recognized as one of Spain’s most notable. Originating from the workshop of the silversmith Gaspar Núñez de Castro in the 18th century, this masterpiece ensures a memorable highlight of your visit. Concluding your tour, you can ascend the bell tower for breathtaking panoramic views of Baeza.
Your 45-minute guided journey culminates in an engaging 360° virtual reality experience. Donning these glasses, you'll virtually traverse 16th-century Baeza, observe the cathedral from a drone's eye view, and uncover its hidden enigmas.
