Caen Walking Tour
Descripción
Art and history take center stage in this guided exploration of Caen, where we will delve into its significant connection to the Normandy Landings during the Second World War. Prepare to be captivated by the capital of Calvados!
Tour Overview
We will convene at the designated time in front of the Tourist Office in Caen to commence our strolling journey through this charming Normandy city, the hub of the Calvados Department.
Our adventure begins as we take in the facade of the Hôtel d'Escoville and the Church of Saint-Pierre. This church, dedicated to Saint Peter, was constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, seamlessly blending Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Can you guess the height of its bell tower? We'll discover that together!
As we make our way through the historic heart of Caen, discussions will revolve around William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England. A notable landmark associated with him is the Château de Caen. We will stop by this fortress to uncover some of the remarkable events it has witnessed over the years.
Our path will then lead us to the Hôtel de Ville, continuing through the old town while uncovering the impact of the Normandy Landings. This historic moment, which unfolded on June 6, 1944, not far from Caen, marked a pivotal point in the Second World War. We will explore this event and discuss the reconstruction efforts undertaken in this northern French region after the war’s end.
In conclusion, we will delve into Caen's connections with the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, established in the aftermath of the conflict. After a 1.5-hour journey through time, we will wrap up our tour in front of the Abbey of Saint-Étienne. This exquisite example of Norman architecture houses the remains of noteworthy figures, including the tomb of William I of England, who passed away in the Norman city of Rouen on September 9, 1087.
