Descripción
Discover the essence of Elche with this complimentary tour, an ideal opportunity to delve into the city's most iconic areas. Journey through time and explore the rich history that dates back to the 15th century!
Tour Overview
At the scheduled meeting point in the Plaça del Parc, we will commence our exploration of Elche, unveiling its significant landmarks, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Our adventure begins at the Municipal Park, home to the remarkable 'Palmeral'. This expansive palm grove spans 1.4 square miles (3.5 km²) and is renowned as the largest in Europe, symbolizing the profound Arabic influence across the Iberian Peninsula. This unique natural site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, boasts a staggering 200,000 palm trees.
Continuing our journey, we will visit the Palace of Altamira, which has served various purposes throughout history, including being a fort, a textile factory, and more recently, a museum. It stands as one of the best-preserved defensive structures in the Alicante province.
Following this, we will stroll along Calle Mayor towards the Mercado Central, where remnants of ancient Arab baths lie hidden alongside lively market activities. Next, we will arrive at the city’s Town Hall, an impressive building from the 15th century. Here, we will take in its detailed facade, while observing the traditional ceramic designs underfoot that reflect the local artistry.
Our next stop will be the Plaza de la Glorieta, where we will delve into the story of Elche's most renowned figure. Subsequently, we will proceed to the Santa Maria Basilica, where we’ll uncover insights about the second UNESCO-listed site recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A notable religious ceremony occurs every August, known as 'El Misteri d'Elx', which has its origins in the 15th century and dramatizes the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
This enlightening tour will conclude after an engaging 1.5 hours.
