Galway Walking Tour
We will commence our adventure at the scheduled time, gathering outside the St Columba's Credit Union office, located by Eyre Square, before diving into the exploration of Galway.
Right from our meeting spot, we will begin by strolling around Eyre Square, where the intriguing Browne Doorway awaits us. This structure, originally the gateway to a prominent family's residence, was relocated to Eyre Square in 1905. Its captivating past is sure to leave you in awe!
Within the park, we will also encounter the Quincentennial Fountain, a striking feature resembling the sails of a boat. Crafted by the distinguished architect and sculptor Eamon O'Doherty, this fountain was inaugurated in 1984 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Galway's elevation to borough status accompanied by mayoral rights.
Our journey continues as we approach Lynch's Castle, a 16th-century edifice that now functions as a bank. This Gothic structure, which was once in the possession of one of the city's influential families, previously served as a hotel before its current banking role.
No exploration of Galway would be complete without a visit to the Galway Market. This lively market operates throughout the year on weekends and presents an array of food and artisan craft stalls showcasing traditional Irish offerings. Afterward, we will wander down Kirwan's Lane, often celebrated as the medieval heart of Galway. Situated in the present-day Latin Quarter, walking through Kirwan's Lane feels like an immersive trip into the past, with 16th and 17th-century architecture reflecting the area’s illustrious history.
As we approach the conclusion of our tour, we will visit one of Galway's most famous landmarks: The Spanish Arch. Erected in 1584, this arch was initially referred to as "Ceann an Bhalla", or "the head of the wall." Discovering the story behind its name change will surely intrigue you!
We will finally cross the Salmon Weir Bridge, leading us to the Galway Cathedral, marking the end of our tour after an enriching 1.5-hour adventure. Slán!
