Gijón Free Walking Tour
Descripción
Embark on a journey through the captivating past of one of Asturias' most stunning cities with our complimentary walking tour of Gijón. Join us as we traverse the maritime heart of Asturias and unveil its top sights!
Tour Overview
We will convene at Stair 3 of Playa de San Lorenzo at the scheduled time. With the ocean as our scenic background, our complimentary walking tour of Gijón will commence. Are you prepared to delve into the history of the maritime capital of Asturias?
Our first destination will be a 15-minute stroll to the fishermen's neighborhood known as Cimadevilla. Here, we will encounter the remarkable Campo Valdés Roman baths, historic public bathing facilities constructed toward the end of the first century. Following this, our path will lead us to the Plaza de Jovellanos, one of the most historically significant squares nestled in Gijón's old town.
We will then set out to find the Plaza Periodista Arturo Arias, where the quaint houses of fishermen and the historic Tabacalera, the city’s former tobacco factory, can be found. Next, we’ll ascend to the Cerro de Santa Catalina, also referred to as La Atalaya, which rises as one of the highest points in Cimadevilla. On this hill stands the concrete artwork named Elogio del horizonte, a city emblem completed in 1990. Interestingly, this sculpture is affectionately nicknamed "King Kong's Toilet."
As we continue, we will navigate the Cuesta del Cholo, a gently sloping street adorned with traditional architecture, providing a glimpse into daily life in Cimadevilla. From this vantage point, you can enjoy picturesque views of the Port of Gijón, referred to as El Musel.
Next, our tour will take us to the Plaza del Marqués. This square, established in the 17th century, has borne witness to numerous pivotal moments in the city's history. You will learn how it thrived as an active port during Gijón's maritime golden era, playing an essential role in commerce.
Finally, we will conclude our exploration at the graceful Plaza Mayor, an ideal setting to wrap up our 2-hour adventure through Gijón's key highlights.
