Day of the Dead Night Tour
As expressed in the saying, “You only die when you've been forgotten,” the sentiment surrounding Día de los Muertos on November 1 resonates deeply with the Mexican community. To truly grasp this experience, join us at the designated time at the Plaza de los Niños Héroes in Morelia for an enchanting Night Tour of the Day of the Dead through the picturesque state of Michoacán.
Our journey begins in the charming town of Tupátaro, famed for its extraordinary Day of the Dead altars. Here, we will witness how families commemorate their deceased loved ones, adorned with photographs, candles, skulls, and flowers. Next, we’ll venture to the adjacent town of Cuanajo, where you can explore the vibrant offerings dedicated to the departed, including the unique offering of the little wooden horse set in the town’s main square.
Following our exploration of the altars, we will proceed to Tzurumutaro, where a visit to the local cemetery awaits. This site offers a heartwarming sight as friends and family gather to honor their departed. Contrary to common perceptions of mourning, the atmosphere here is one of celebration, filled with joy, as the living come together with the spirits of their loved ones in a festive night, rich with music and dancing until dawn.
Our tour continues with a visit to the Ucasanastacua pier, where we’ll board a boat to journey to the island of Pacanda. Here, the night unfolds with various rituals and ceremonies, offering a glimpse into traditions that trace back to the ancient Purepécha culture.
As the excursion comes to a close, we’ll return by boat to the Ucasanastacua dock, from where we will transport you back to the meeting point in Morelia, with an estimated arrival time around 15 hours later.
