“I die innocent of all the crimes imputed to me. I pardon the authors of my death, and pray to God that the blood you're about to shed will never fall upon France.” These were the profound words uttered by Louis XVI before his execution on January 21, 1793. Several months later, his wife, Marie Antoinette, met a similar fate at what is now known as Place de la Concorde, marking the end of the French monarchy.

During the chaotic era of the French Revolution, both monarchs were initially laid to rest near Rue d'Anjou. By the 19th century, their remains were relocated to the Basilica of Saint-Denis, and the Chapelle Expiatoire was subsequently established on this site.

Inside the chapel, visitors can appreciate two marble sculptures representing the final monarchs of France. One depicts an angel guiding Louis XVI to the heavens, crafted by François Joseph Bosio, while the other, by Jean-Pierre Cortot, illustrates Marie Antoinette being consoled by faith.

The surrounding gardens provide an opportunity to admire the exterior of the chapel, including its neoclassical dome.

Opening Hours of the Chapelle Expiatoire

The chapel welcomes visitors during the following hours:

• Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm
• Closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25.

Last entry is granted 30 minutes prior to closing.

Admission Free of Charge

Entry to the Chapelle Expiatoire is complimentary for the following groups:

• EU residents aged 18 to 25
• Individuals under 18 years of age, irrespective of nationality

• Additionally, free admission is available to all on the third Sunday of September.
