Bamberg Free Tour

At 11 am, we will gather at the Obstmarkt square located in the heart of Bamberg's historic district. From there, we will stroll through the charming streets of this Bavarian gem, learning about its key monuments and uncovering fascinating historical anecdotes.

The tour commences with a crossing of the Regnitz river, where we will pause to appreciate the old town hall. This medieval structure impresses with its stunning baroque frescoes and is said to symbolize the town's victory over ecclesiastical authority. We’ll delve into this intriguing backstory!

We will also discuss the grim period of witch hunts and trials that took place in the 17th century, during which nearly 1000 women met tragic fates in Bamberg. This chilling history is sure to send shivers down your spine!

Following this, we will proceed to the Cathedral, Bamberg's most frequented structure. Over a millennium old, this sacred site houses the Bamberg rider. There are various theories regarding the identity of this enigmatic equestrian figure, ranging from King Stephan of Hungary to Constantine the Great and even one of the Three Wise Men.

Adjacent to the cathedral, we will take a look at the Old Residence and New Residence of the Bishops, magnificent palatial buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Afterward, our route will lead us to the stunning Little Venice, one of the city's most charming neighborhoods.

We will then reach the historic tavern Schlenkerla. As we admire its exterior, we will discuss its signature offering, the smoked beer, which intriguingly bears a hint of ham in its flavor.

The tour will come to a close at 1:30 pm outside the tavern.
