Auschwitz Subcamps Day Trip

The narrative surrounding Auschwitz extends well beyond its primary location. On this excursion to the Auschwitz subcamps, we will delve into the lesser-known aspects of the Holocaust, exploring sites that have remained preserved since World War II.

Day Trip Overview

At the appointed time, we will gather at Hotel Malta?ski, situated in the center of Kraków. Following this, we will embark on a journey lasting approximately 1.5 hours toward the O?wi?cim area, where various subcamps of the Auschwitz network can be found.

On this day trip, a meticulously guided 3.5-hour exploration will take us through multiple locations significant to the system of subcamps established by the Third Reich. Our journey begins at the historic Judenrampe, the oldest railway ramp associated with the camp. This site witnessed the initial arrival of prisoners, before they were sorted for different camps, providing a haunting reminder of the past.

In close proximity, we will find the warehouses for potatoes and cabbages, which were vital for supplying food to the camps. The structures remain largely intact, allowing us to grasp the scale of the Nazi logistical operations. We will then proceed to Auschwitz III - Monowitz, commonly referred to as Monowice. This subcamp had a direct association with the IG Farben chemical corporation, where inmates were exploited as forced labor. During this part of the tour, we will uncover the economic mechanisms that underpinned the atrocities of the Holocaust.

About halfway through our exploration, a 30-minute break will be taken to rest and refresh.

A pivotal site during our tour will be the SS canteen, a venue that served as a retreat for officers, including notable figures such as Rudolf Höss and Josef Mengele. Our visit will continue to Bor and Budy, two women's subcamps situated on the O?wi?cim outskirts where women were subjected to harsh labor. Many of these locations still house the original barracks.

Additionally, we will tour the Remembrance Museum of Land of O?wi?cim Residents, a memorial dedicated to the local inhabitants who risked their lives to aid fleeing prisoners.

We will conclude our day by returning to Kraków, marking the end of our journey approximately 7 to 8 hours after departure.

Key Information

It is essential to note that this trip excludes a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The subcamps of Auschwitz are managed by a separate authority, each governed by distinct rules and access guidelines.
