Your entry ticket facilitates a journey through the historic cells that once formed one of southern France's major state prisons. However, this structure was not always a confinement facility. Constructed on the orders of King Francis I between 1524 and 1531, its creation was driven by the necessity to safeguard the shoreline against maritime threats due to its vantage location.

This strategic placement allows for breathtaking coastal vistas from the castle's towers and parapets. From the summit, visitors can even gaze upon the adjacent Frioul archipelago.

Visiting Hours

The opening hours of Château d'If are as follows:

• From April 1 to September 30: open daily from 10 am to 6 pm
• From October 1 to March 31: open daily from 10 am to 5 pm

Be aware that the last admission is contingent upon the ferry schedules from Marseille's port.

Special Visiting Hours

• On December 24 and 31: the closing time will be at 4 pm

Complimentary Admission

Access to Château d'If is free for certain groups:

• Residents of the European Union aged 18 to 25.
• Individuals under 18 years, regardless of their nationality.

To obtain the free entry, you must visit the ticket office at the site and provide a valid identification confirming your eligibility for a complimentary ticket.

Moreover, free admission applies to everyone on the first Sunday of the month within the periods of January 1 to March 31, November 1 to December 31, and the third weekend of September.

Transportation Not Provided

It’s important to mention that this ticket does not include ferry transportation to the Island of If. To reach the castle, you can board a ferry from the Old Port in Marseille (Vieux Port), but keep in mind that the fare for this ferry is not included in the Château d'If ticket price.
