Tour Details

The meeting point is at the entrance to Selvatura Park, a natural sanctuary nestled within the Monteverde cloud forest. Prepare to explore the captivating realm of Costa Rica's reptiles and amphibians.

This herpetarium tour lasts between half an hour and 45 minutes. We will start by observing glass terrariums, specially designed for optimal viewing of the specimens. Throughout the exhibits, we will encounter miniature recreations of jungles, savannahs, and riverbanks, resembling their natural habitats.

We will stroll through the amphibian display cases, showcasing emerald and sapphire-coloured frogs and, shortly after, the iconic red-eyed tree frog of Costa Rica. Its crimson eyelids can be admired as it clings to the branches. We will also discuss how their vibrant colours and toxins serve as an incredible defense mechanism in nature.

Moving along, various species of reptiles await us, including the remarkable Central American Jesus Christ lizard. Did you know its name refers to its incredible ability to run on water? Its green, nearly iridescent crest adds eloquence to this species.

Next, we will enter the reptile section, where an array of specimens awaits to evoke both awe and respect. Here, we will observe the red and yellow ringed coral snake, the boa, an impressive bocaracá, a feared velvet snake, and the striking rattlesnake. We will share insights about their behavior while observing their scales, vertical pupils, and forked tongues in motion.

Throughout the tour, we will learn how controlled humidity and precisely adjusted temperature allow the Selvatura Park reptile house to accommodate and study over 25 species without compromising their welfare. You'll leave with a newfound fascination!
