Transport Options to Buenos Aires: Bus and Ferry
Your travel experience to Buenos Aires kicks off at the Tres Cruces station, where you can choose your departure time to catch a bus to Colonia del Sacramento.
Following a 3-hour journey, you'll reach the Colonia del Sacramento dock in western Uruguay. This is where you will board the ferry to Buenos Aires, embarking on a picturesque crossing over the River Plate that lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Upon arrival at Puerto Madero, you will disembark and have the freedom to explore the city as you wish.
You may choose to remain in the vibrant Argentine capital or opt for a return ticket with transportation back to Montevideo. In this case, your journey will continue with a ferry ride from Buenos Aires back to Colonia del Sacramento, followed by a bus ride to the Uruguayan capital.
Remember, you have the flexibility to return to Uruguay either the same day or within 90 days following your initial departure.
Transport Schedule
Below is the schedule for the summer season, effective from December 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026:
- Departures from Montevideo bus station: 5 am, 6:30 am, 12:45 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4:45 pm
- Departures from Buenos Aires ferry terminal: 8 am, 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, 6:15 pm, and 8 pm
Please note that the schedules and connections between buses and ferries are fixed and cannot be altered.
Ferry to Buenos Aires
If preferred, you can book solely the ferry service to Buenos Aires from Colonia del Sacramento.

Important Info
This voucher isn't valid for travel. The local provider will email you the voucher that you'll need to present at check-in to exchange for the ticket that'll grant you admission to the ferry. When checking in, you must also show your personal documentation.
It's also mandatory to carry a valid passport or any other necessary documentation (depending on your nationality) and to have a valid travel insurance covering medical expenses to enter Uruguay and Argentina, as well as a reservation number.
In case you do not have travel insurance, the Immigration Department may prevent you from entering the country.
The company won't be responsible for any traveller's lack of documentation.
Meeting Point in Montevideo
You'll need to get to the Colonia Express bus terminal in Montevideo will in advance. The address is as follows: Tres Cruces Terminal, Boulevard General Artigas, Local 31ª (next to the port of Montevideo). Once you've arrived in Colonia del Sacramento by bus, your boarding card will be printed when you check in. For this part of the trip, you'll need to show your valid documentation that confirms your identity and has the booking number visible.
Meeting Point in Buenos Aires
2 hours before the scheduled time, you'll need to head to the Madero Sur port terminal in Buenos Aires. You'll check in for boarding at the Colonia Express stand located at the following address: Avenida Elvira Rawson de Dellepiane, 155.
Your boarding card will be printed when you check in. You'll need your valid documentation that confirms your identity and has the booking number visible.
Once you're back at the port terminal in Colonia del Sacramento, you'll be told which platform and bus to head to so you can get back to Montevideo.

The timetables and connections between boats and buses are predetermined; therefore, they cannot be modified.

Please remember that you can bring a suitcase between 23 and 30 kg (50 to 66 lbs) and a personal item.
