Escape from Valparaíso for a day and explore one of the prominent colonies of Humboldt penguins located along the Chilean coast with our activity on Cachagua Island. This experience promises to be unforgettable.

Cachagua Island Penguin Watching

Your adventure begins at 9 am with a pickup from your accommodation in Valparaíso, followed by a drive north through picturesque areas including Viña del Mar, Reñaca, and Concón, as we pass near the mouth of the Aconcagua River.

After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of traveling along the stunning Pacific coast, we will arrive in Zapallar. Here, in this charming town of the Petorca province, we will embark on a fisherman’s boat that will transport us to Cachagua Island, home to one of the largest Humboldt penguin colonies in Chile.

During the hour-long boat ride, you will have the opportunity to observe the penguins and various coastal birds that inhabit this area, including pelicans, seagulls, and neotropic cormorants. The diversity of avian species documented here is truly remarkable.

Once our boating excursion concludes, we will return to the dock in Zapallar. Back on land, we will visit a local empanada shop to sample this traditional Chilean dish, accompanied by a refreshing beverage of your choice, either soda or mineral water.

We will then make our way back to your hotel in Valparaíso, aiming to arrive around 3 pm.

Cachagua Island stands out as one of the prime locations on the Chilean coastline for observing Humboldt penguins. Nevertheless, wildlife remains unpredictable; the numbers of penguins you might see can vary due to multiple factors, including the weather conditions and the breeding cycles of different species.
