Lava Tunnel Tour
Description
Explore an intriguing lava tube on this adventure through the Raufarhólshellir caves, recognized as one of the most extensive lava tunnels in Iceland, beginning from Reykjavik.
Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel Exploration
We will meet at the designated time at the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik and set out from the heart of Iceland towards the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel.
Upon arrival at the cave, participants will be equipped with safety helmets and flashlights to commence a guided exploration of the lava tube. The will lead us through the caves and subterranean chambers shaped by volcanic processes dating back over 5,000 years.
Stretching nearly 4,500 feet (1,360 meters), this site ranks as the fourth-longest lava tube in Iceland. Our easy walk will cover about 1,150 feet (350 meters), revealing a stunning display of hues formed by various volcanic minerals in the rock. Additionally, we will delve into the natural occurrences that contributed to this geological wonder. While Iceland hosts multiple lava tunnels, Raufarhólshellir stands out as one of the most breathtaking.
The lava tunnel features numerous wooden staircases and walkways, ensuring a safe exploration of different sections of the cave. You may even recognize one special area from the film Noah, featuring actors Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins, which was filmed in this very location.
Concluding our excursion through the lava tunnel, we will return to the starting point by bus, completing the tour with a total duration of 3 hours.
