Description

Uncover the mysteries of emerald, the centerpiece of Colombia's gemstone heritage, during this guided tour of Cartagena's historic heart. This experience provides insight into why emeralds are considered a distinctive treasure globally, combining this exquisite gem's history with the allure of Caribbean culture.

Tour Overview

Upon arrival at the scheduled hour, we'll gather at the Plaza de Los Coches in Cartagena de Indias to embark on this insightful journey into the world of emeralds, regarded as one of the most sought-after precious stones today.

As we navigate the cobblestone streets of the historic district, you will learn about Cartagena's pivotal role as a major hub in the Colonial era for trading precious stones and gold, a legacy that endures within the city.

Continuing our walk, we will visit the Plaza de Bolívar, where we will discuss the significance of local jewellers. Our next stop will be the Calle de la Moneda, a historic route where riches from the emerald mines of Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor made their way into the city. You will also encounter some Colonial buildings that served as gems warehouses.

Next, we will explore an emerald gallery or a working studio. Here, you will gain insights into the gemstones' origins, history, and the intricate processes involved in their extraction and crafting. You will discover how to identify authentic emeralds versus synthetic counterparts, observe the carving, polishing, and setting techniques, and learn the unique stories behind various stones.

To conclude our enlightening journey, we will gather at the Plaza de Bolívar for a sample of a local beverage, such as refreshing coconut lemonade. The entire experience will last approximately 2.5 hours.
