Angahuan & Paricutín Volcano Tour
Description
Ascend a volcano, discover a town enveloped in lava, and immerse yourself in the traditions of the indigenous purhépecha community on this excursion to Angahuan and Parcutín Volcano from Morelia.
Excursion to Angahuan & Paricutín Volcano
We will begin your adventure by picking you up from your accommodation in Morelia at the scheduled time. Our journey will take us to the remnants of the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro, located at the base of the Paricutín volcano. Here, we will embark on a hiking trail that stretches for 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles).
As we hike up the slopes of the volcano, you will encounter hawthorn, prickly pear, and oak trees dotting the landscape. The surroundings showcase the dry characteristics prompted by volcanic activities. Remarkably, this volcano is recognized as the youngest in the world, having emerged unexpectedly from a farmer's field on February 20, 1943.
Upon completing our hike, we'll visit the lava-covered remains of the Church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, the sole evidence of a village that was obliterated by the eruption of Paricutín. Inside the church, you will marvel at the façade and bell tower, which have astonishingly withstood nine years of ongoing volcanic eruptions.
Our next stop will be the village of Angahuan, where you will have the chance to engage with the local indigenous Purhepecha culture and language. Important sites we will explore include a mural illustrating the Legend of Paricutín, the Franciscan Chapel of Huatápera, and the Moorish-style Church of Santiago Apóstol. Following our exploration of Angahuan, you will enjoy an hour of leisure to sample local dishes and flavors.
At the conclusion of our tour, we will return to your hotel in Morelia, arriving around 8 pm.
