Description
Embark on an unforgettable journey to the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, starting from Morelia, and uncover the fascinating migration habits of these exquisite butterflies.
Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Sierra Chincua
Your adventure begins at 7 am with a pickup from your accommodation in Morelia, followed by a scenic drive lasting around two and a half hours towards the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.
Upon arrival, you will disembark from the minibus and begin your exploration along the trails, searching for the enchanting monarch butterflies. These remarkable insects travel vast distances, spanning thousands of kilometers from the northern United States and Canada, to the lush environment filled with fir, pine, and oyamel trees.
Midway through our trek, a one-hour break will be taken to enjoy a light snack. Following this, we will proceed through the stunning Chincua mountain range surrounding Tlalpujahua, where we can observe the butterfly colonies. Remarkably, these butterflies expand to about 11 centimeters across when their wings are spread and weigh only half a gram. Their role in pollination is crucial for the preservation of Mexico’s forests.
Once we reach the monarch butterfly nesting area, a fascinating site awaits with the presence of eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalises. You will have an hour of free time to enjoy lunch, replenishing your energy for the return journey. The hike back to the starting point will take approximately 40 minutes.
At the conclusion of this enchanting excursion, we will transport you back to your hotel in Morelia, where we expect to arrive around 10 pm.
