Yunuén & Pacanda Islands + Ihuatzio Tour
Description
Discover the rich heritage of the Purépecha civilization and explore two picturesque islands on this excursion to Yunuén, Pacanda, and Ihuatzio starting from Morelia.
Yunuén & Pacanda Islands + Ihuatzio Excursion
Your journey begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Morelia at 9 am, as we make our way to Lake Patzcuaro. Upon arrival, we will board a boat that will navigate toward Yunuén Island, a name that translates to "crescent moon," an evocative title that will soon reveal its significance.
While on this tranquil island, we will wander through forests filled with junipers, pines, cedars, and oaks. During our visit, we also have the opportunity to participate in a workshop on the Purépecha language, exploring its three dialects from the central, highland, and lakeside regions.
Following our time on Yunuén, we will hop on a boat to make our way to Pacanda Island. Alternatively, for those seeking adventure, there’s an option to zip-line across a 550-meter stretch to reach the island at exhilarating speed!
As we explore Pacanda Island, home to around 400 residents, we will discover the main square and traditional homes, all while enjoying stunning lake views. Here, we may encounter local fishermen employing butterfly nets. Afterward, you’ll have an hour of leisure to enjoy a meal.
Next, we will board the boat once more to return to shore, continuing our journey to the Ihuatzio archaeological site. This ancient Purépecha settlement was an important astronomical observatory and ceremonial hub before Spanish colonization. During our visit, we will explore the pyramids dedicated to the deities Curicaveri and Xaratanga.
At the conclusion of our adventure, we will return to Morelia, arriving at your hotel by 7 pm.
