Description

The Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid presents a unique exploration of Spain's regal history, showcasing the influence of the Trastámara, Habsburg, and Bourbon dynasties through an exceptional assembly of artifacts.

Why Explore the Royal Collections Gallery?

Situated strategically between the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, this gallery is a remarkable museum devoted to the heritage of the Spanish monarchy.

Your visit to the Royal Collections Gallery allows for a self-paced journey through its permanent exhibits. The experience commences on level -1, known as the Habsburg Floor, where an introductory overview of the Trastámara dynasty and its Catholic Monarchs is provided, leading up to the reign of Charles II.

This floor continues with dedicated spaces for the notable Habsburg monarchs: Charles I, Philip II, Philip III, Philip IV, and Charles II, alongside archaeological finds from the original Arab wall of Madrid.

Some notable items in this section include:

  • The Portrait of Isabella the Catholic by Juan de Flandes
  • Flemish tapestries
  • The armor of Charles I
  • Artworks by El Greco, Titian, and Bosch
  • A captivating painting of a riderless horse by Diego Velázquez
  • The sculpture depicting Archangel Saint Michael vanquishing the devil, created by La Roldana

On level -2, the Bourbon Floor showcases exhibitions focusing on the Bourbon lineage, featuring kings and queens such as Philip V, Louis I, Ferdinand VI, Charles III, Charles IV, Ferdinand VII, Isabella II, Alfonso XII, and Alfonso XIII. Visitors can expect to see:

  • Elegant 18th-century decorative furniture and tapestries
  • A royal carriage from the 19th century
  • Photographs of royalty from the early 20th century
  • Historical musical instruments
  • Remarkable pieces by renowned artists like Velázquez, Caravaggio, and Goya

From the gallery, take a moment to appreciate splendid vistas of the Manzanares River and the Campo del Moro gardens, both of which offer pathways worthy of exploration.
