Description

The Zaghouan Aqueduct and the Roman Water Temple stand as essential landmarks for anyone looking to delve into Tunisia's rich historical narrative. Engage with these remarkable sites through the insights of a knowledgeable English-speaking guide.

Itinerary for the Zaghouan Day Trip

Your journey commences at 8 am with a pick-up from your accommodation in Tunis. After approximately thirty minutes, you will reach your initial destination: the Roman aqueduct of Zaghouan.

In the second century, during Emperor Hadrian's reign, the Roman Empire grappled with a common challenge in northern Africa: the lack of a dependable water supply. To address this, they constructed an aqueduct that linked a water source at Zaghouan to the ancient city of Carthage. A significant portion of this aqueduct has survived the ages, providing you the opportunity to investigate this remarkable feat of engineering. Your expert guide will elaborate on its innovative construction and design techniques, which were advanced for their epoch.

Following your exploration of the aqueduct, the tour will proceed to the outskirts of modern Zaghouan, leading you to yet another significant archaeological site. Here, you will discover the renowned Roman Water Temple, also built upon the directives of Emperor Hadrian. While you admire the beautifully curved portico, your guide will share insights regarding the sacred spring's importance and its reverence in ancient society.

Upon finishing your visit to the Water Temple, you will be escorted to a local restaurant in central Zaghouan for a tasty traditional meal featuring Turkish specialties. The blend of Mediterranean and Arab flavors promises to deliver an unforgettable culinary experience!

Once your meal concludes, you will begin your return journey to Tunis, arriving back at your hotel around 5 pm.
