Alcazaba Guided Tour
Description
Explore Almería's most important monument and the largest Arab citadel in Spain. Discover the secrets lurking deep in the walls of the 10th-century fortress as you experience the historic Alcazaba.
Tour Details
Meet your guide at the entrance of the Alcazaba of Almería, the largest Arab citadel in Spain. Built in the 10th century, this vast fortress was later expanded by the Catholic Monarchs following the Reconquista, resulting in a unique blend of Islamic and Christian elements.
The tour begins at the Puerta del Viento, known today as the Gate of Justice. Our first stop will be the gardens of the first enclosure, where we will explore the ingenious hydraulic system that once supplied water to the citadel. Climbing the garden steps leads us to the Muro de la Vela, or 'Wall of the Sail', historically home to a large bell that informed the population of significant events in Almería.
After crossing the wall, we step into the second enclosure to explore the Caliphal cisterns. Continuing through the Hermitage Gate, we will visit the troop baths, the Arab houses, and the captivating remains of the Muslim king's palace and administrative buildings.
Our next destination is the remarkably well-preserved Christian castle, where we will gain insights into the stronghold's later history. As we descend, we will pause at the warden's house to enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean gardens of La Hoya, the ancient city walls, the Castle of San Cristóbal, and the impressive Sacred Heart of Jesus monument.
Finally, after approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, we will conclude the tour at the castle.
