Kariri-Xocó Indigenous Village 4-Day Visit
Description
Engage in a distinctive cultural and spiritual journey during this four-day excursion to the Kariri-Xocó indigenous community, where you will immerse yourself in their everyday traditions.
Trip Overview
Day 1: Departure from Aracaju to Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó
The adventure commences at Hotel da Costa, offering a chance for a delightful breakfast. Once gathered, we'll embark on a journey towards Porto Real do Colégio, the home of the Kariri-Xocó village. Approximately two hours later, we'll reach the revered site of Warakedzã.
Upon arrival, a warm welcome awaits us, featuring a Toré dance alongside a ceremonial smoking ritual that reflects the Kariri-Xocó's deep connection with their environment. Following this, we’ll share a meal with community members, enriching our understanding of their heritage. Rejuvenated, we’ll then observe the captivating body painting using jenipapo fruit, a native Brazilian plant.
As night falls, we’ll gather around a campfire to hear the village’s ancestral tales, before retreating to our camp for a restful night.
Day 2: Experiencing Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó
Our second day begins at dawn, signaling an opportunity to participate in tree planting, fostering a deeper bond with the natural surroundings of the Kariri-Xocó. Next, we’ll enjoy breakfast followed by a cooking workshop, exploring the indigenous techniques using fresh local produce.
We will then meet the indigenous leader Takayoa, who will guide us in crafting the maraca, an essential instrument for the Kariri-Xocó culture. As lunchtime arrives, we’ll partake in a cleansing ceremony that involves clay and herbal baths, leaving us feeling revitalized.
Our evening will include dining with the locals, accompanied once more by storytelling around the campfire.
Day 3: Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó to São Francisco River and Back
Prepared for another exciting day? After relishing a hearty breakfast, we’ll travel to the banks of the São Francisco River and hop into traditional canoes for a voyage along the Velho Chico riverbed, learning about its significance as we paddle.
Post-excursion, a refreshing swim in the river awaits before we return for lunch. With renewed vigor, we’ll observe two captivating spiritual rituals of the Kariri-Xocó: the warriors' dance featuring spears and the consecration ritual, encompassing a potent hallucinogenic beverage known as jurema and a snuff powder derived from local plants.
As the day winds down, we’ll unwind with dinner before heading off to sleep.
Day 4: Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó to Aracaju
After breakfast, we’ll participate in a medicinal herb workshop, complete with a tea tasting session. Once the workshop concludes, we’ll begin our journey back to Aracaju, departing around midday to ensure a timely arrival at the Aracaju International Airport for your scheduled flight.
