Bergen Free Tour
Description
Discover Bergen’s rich history and culture on this free walking tour. Explore Byparken, the KODE museum, the fish market, Bryggen, and the Bergenhus Fortress!
Tour Details
Meet us at the Seafarer's monument in Torgallmenningen Square to begin our free tour of Bergen.
Leaving the main square of Bergen behind, we'll walk through City Park, known locally as Byparken and the green heart of the city. As we stroll along, we'll arrive at the park's centerpiece: the Music Pavilion. Built in 1888, this gazebo is a symbol of Bergen's deep connection with music and cultural identity. Did you know Edvard Grieg, one of Norway's most influential composers, was born in Bergen?
Next up, we'll walk towards KODE, one of the largest museums in Scandinavia for art, music, and design. Here, we'll learn how KODE isn't just a museum, it's also home to Norway's cultural treasures, from works by Edvard Munch to Edvard Grieg's composing villa.
Then, we'll stroll over to the Old Town Hall, a Renaissance building that once played a significant role in Bergen's history as the center where the city was once governed.
From here, we'll head into the bustling fish market—the beating heart of Bergen. For over 700 years, merchants have brought their fresh catch to sell and trade. Walking among the rows of stalls, we'll see fresh salmon, king crab, and the famous Norwegian fish cakes and smell the saltwater in the air.
Nearby, we'll walk over to Bryggen, the iconic row of colorful houses along the waterfront. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area dates back to the 14th century. Traditionally a Hanseatic trading port, now the area is home to craft shops, art studios and even the Bryggens Museum.
Our route continues to the Bergenhus Fortress. While still a military site today, this fortress historically protected the city from pirates, rival kingdoms, and even Nazi occupation during World War II.
After our stop in front of the fortress, we'll make our way back towards the fish market, where we'll end the tour 2 hours later.
