Private Tour of Besalú
Our adventure commences at 11 am at the Romanesque bridge of Besalú, setting the stage for a captivating exploration of this picturesque Girona town. Here, we will delve into the history of Besalú as well as the La Garrocha region, renowned in the northeast of Catalonia for its stunning natural park.
As we traverse the 11th-century monumental Romanesque bridge, we will step into the enchanting historic center of Besalú. This area exemplifies the preservation of cultural heritage, with streets that echo the layout and architecture of medieval times, providing a remarkable glimpse into the past.
Our journey will take us past local shops and open-air markets, leading us to the riverbank where we will explore the Jewish Quarter. Here, we will encounter the Micvé, a ritual bath found nowhere else on the peninsula, alongside the remnants of the synagogue and Jewish school.
Continuing our walk, we will arrive at the Town Hall Square to sample some of Besalú's local delicacies, such as sausage, cheese, and the renowned ratafía, a delightful herb-based liqueur.
Our next stop will be the Plaza de San Pedro, where we will visit its Romanesque church followed by the church of San Vicente. Interestingly, this site once housed one of the pieces of the Vera Cruz, the cross on which Christ was crucified.
To conclude our tour, we will ascend to a vantage point providing a stunning panoramic view of Besalú. After two hours of exploration, we will wrap up at this picturesque location.
