Retiro Neighbourhood Free Walking Tour
Description
Explore the luxurious Retiro neighbourhood in Buenos Aires on this engaging walking tour, showcasing its iconic landmarks, elegant palaces, and the historic San Martín Monument.
Tour Details
We'll convene at the Plaza General San Martín, adjacent to the prominent Monument of General San Martín. Here, as we observe this significant sculpture, a discussion about its importance and the legacy of this Argentinean hero will unfold, offering a fitting beginning to our exploration of the Retiro neighbourhood!
Our journey will lead us to admire the palaces surrounding the square: San Martín Palace, Paz Palace, and Palacio Haedo. These are exemplary representations of the rich history and architectural grandeur of Buenos Aires' aristocracy. Notably, some of these buildings once served as residences for the city's most influential families.
As we proceed, we'll encounter the Monument to the Fallen in Malvinas, a poignant reminder of the more recent conflicts in Argentina's history. Our path will then take us along the renowned Calle Florida, a vital commercial artery of the city, where we'll visit the Galerias Pacifico. This shopping centre, housed in a historic Beaux-Arts style building, echoes the grandeur of Parisian passages. You will have 15 minutes of free time to explore its interiors and appreciate the elegant frescoes.
Next, we'll proceed to the striking Kavanagh Building, recognized as one of the tallest residential structures in Buenos Aires, followed by a visit to the Torre Monumental, commonly referred to as the Tower of the English, constructed by British residents in celebration of the centenary of the May Revolution.
After approximately 2 hours, our free tour will conclude at this last location.
