Covadonga Lakes Day Trip
Description
Enchanting vistas and rich traditions are the highlights of this excursion from Cangas de Onís. We will explore the striking Covadonga Lakes alongside the Basilica and the Sanctuary, where La Santina resides. This route is essential for anyone visiting Asturias!
Details of the Excursion
Our adventure begins with a gathering at the bus station in Cangas de Onís, setting the stage for our trip to Covadonga. Are you prepared for an extraordinary experience?
Next, we will make our way into the stunning Picos de Europa National Park, which holds one of Asturias' most remarkable natural wonders: the Covadonga Lakes.
We’ll start with a visit to the Entrelagos viewpoint, an ideal location to take in a breathtaking view of Lakes Enol and Ercina while learning about their glacial formation.
Our journey will continue to the Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga. Close to this grand neo-Romanesque structure, constructed between 1877 and 1901, we’ll delve into the captivating tale of Don Pelayo and the Spanish Reconquest.
Additionally, we’ll tour the Sanctuary of Covadonga, where the sacred grotto housing the revered image of the Virgin of Covadonga, affectionately known as La Santina, is located. Here, we’ll also visit the Royal Pantheon, the final resting place of Don Pelayo.
As our day draws to a close, we will head back to Cangas, concluding this excursion after approximately 4.5 to 5 hours.
Meeting Point
Participants should meet at one of the bus bays at the Cangas de Onís bus station. This designated spot may vary and will be confirmed on the excursion day. During your booking, we will provide guidance on identifying the bus upon your arrival.
Itinerary Adjustments
Be aware that the Covadonga Lakes are situated within Picos de Europa National Park, which has its own regulations regarding parking and access. There may be occasions when access to the park is restricted for management purposes or when the time allowed at the lakes is shortened without prior notice. Should this occur, we will extend our visits to other points along the journey.
Access to the Covadonga Lakes
Accessing the Covadonga Lakes may involve climbing either 200 or 400 steps, depending on the assigned parking area within the park.
Alternative Excursions
If this tour is fully booked, consider our small-group excursion to the Covadonga Lakes.
Additionally, explore the option of a day trip from Gijón covering Covadonga, Cangas de Onís, and Lastres or one from Oviedo.

Informations importantes
On the day of the activity, we’ll depart at the indicated time from one of the bus bays at the Cangas de Onís bus station. You’ll recognize the bus because it has the name “Buendía Tours” printed on it. We recommend being there at least 10 minutes in advance.
Please note that the schedule may vary. In this case, the local team will contact you to inform you of the exact time and meeting point.
We recommend wearing footwear with good grip and, for those who need it, a walking stick.
Changes to the Itinerary
Please note that the Covadonga Lakes are located within the Picos de Europa National Park, whose regulations govern parking and access order. It’s also possible that the park may close access for organizational reasons or that time spent at the lakes may be reduced without prior notice, as it is a national park. If this happens, we’ll dedicate more time to the other stops on the day trip.
