Mount Etna Hike + Cable Car

Embark on a journey to ascend the highest volcano in Europe with this hiking adventure on Mount Etna. We will journey via a cable car and traverse mesmerizing landscapes adorned with craters and lava formations. This promises to be an unforgettable experience!

Hike Overview

We'll convene at Monte Gebel, adjacent to the Sapienza refuge, at the scheduled time. Our adventure begins with a cable car ride that ascends to about 2500 meters (8202 feet) in a mere 15 minutes. Once we reach the summit, we will set out on our hike along Mount Etna's slopes. Are you ready to explore?

Our trek kicks off as we examine the remnants of the 2002 eruption's lava flow. After approximately 40 minutes of hiking, we will enter a stunning canyon carved by lava, culminating at an altitude of 2750 meters (9022 feet). Following a short break, we will proceed towards the western base of the Barbagallo Craters, created during the notable 2002 eruption.

As we ascend, you'll be captivated by the ever-changing landscape. At the maximum height permitted by volcanic monitoring, we will pause for 30 minutes to recharge. Remember to pack some snacks!

Once replenished, we’ll take in the sights of Etna's active craters along with its fumaroles emitting vapour and gases. Onward, we will loop around the Barbagallo craters before commencing an exhilarating descent down a sandy slope toward the Bove Valley, an impressive ancient volcanic caldera.

Finally, we will make our way back to the cable car station for our return to the Sapienza refuge, concluding this remarkable 5-hour adventure. What an extraordinary experience it will be!
