Hiking to Serracozzo Cave
Description
Embark on an unforgettable hiking journey to Serracozzo Cave, where you will traverse the narrow volcanic tunnel of Earth's most famous geological feature, Europe's largest active volcano.
Description
Our adventure begins at the designated time when we gather at the car park near the Citelli Refuge, setting off on a trek towards the noteworthy Serracozzo Cave, the crown jewel of Mount Etna. Join us as we uncover the mysteries within this iconic volcano!
We'll ascend from a starting altitude of 1740 metres (5708 feet) until reaching the remarkable height of 2160 metres (7086 feet), where the entrance to Serracozzo Cave awaits. The route takes us through the lush birch forests integral to the landscape, revealing the fascinating remnants of volcanic rock along the way.
As we approach the magnificent Bove Valley, we will encounter the stunning Serra delle Concazze, an expansive 8-kilometre-long (4.9-mile) depression located on Etna's eastern slope. This will be our designated break area, where you can rejuvenate with the packed lunch you've brought.
Following our rest, we will venture into Serracozzo Cave, stepping inside the volcanic tunnel. Prepare to be enthralled by one of the most breathtaking sites within the Etna National Park. Formed in 1971, this elongated lava canyon is illuminated by a stunning beam of light filtering through a small aperture in the ceiling, creating a mesmerizing display!
After our exploration of the cave, we will exit and make our way back to the starting point, completing a rewarding 4-hour hiking experience.
