Day Trip Overview

Your journey begins with a pick-up from your Chennai hotel at 9 am. We will then embark on a trip to one of the most cherished locations along India’s eastern coastline, Mahabalipuram, located just two hours away.

Upon arrival, we’ll start to uncover the monumental complex that has earned its UNESCO World Heritage designation. Our first destination will be the renowned Coastal Temple, dating back to the 8th century. This sacred site features three shrines, dedicated to Vishnu and two to Shiva, and is notable for being among the oldest five-storey structures in India.

The adventure continues with a visit to the five structures known as Pancha Rathas. These impressive edifices, hewn from massive granite blocks, are imbued with a unique sense of sacredness. Remarkably, during the devastating tsunami that struck the Bay of Bengal in 2004, the Pancha Rathas stood resilient against nature’s fury.

Following a self-arranged lunch break, we’ll admire the intricate bas-reliefs at the temple of Sri Sthal Sayana Perumal. These artistic depictions illustrate two significant narratives from Hindu mythology: the descent of the Ganges and the penance of Arjuna. Are you familiar with these tales?
