Ayampe River Birdwatching Experience

Once we meet in Puerto López or Montañita at the specified time, we will embark on a journey to the Ecuadorian rainforest to commence this birdwatching adventure on the Ayampe River. Let’s set off!

After a travel time of around 20 to 40 minutes to reach the Ayampe River, situated about 15 kilometers north of Machalilla National Park, we will begin a relaxed stroll along the riverbank.

The Ayampe River serves not only as a fresh water source for the region but also stands out as a prime location for birdwatching, hosting an impressive 328 bird species. Some of these species are endemic to Ecuador and the Tumbesian region, such as the Esmeraldas woodstar, which can be spotted from December through March.

During our journey, we will pause for a breakfast break, enjoying coffee or other hot drinks along with fruit and vegetable sandwiches filled with cheese.

As we resume the tour, we will keep our eyes peeled for a variety of species such as the collared araçari, Ecuadorian trogons, gray-backed hawks, great white herons, and pelicans. Throughout the experience, we'll share insights about their unique traits.

In the end, after four to four and a half hours, we will conclude our journey at the meeting point.
