Your adventure starts at 10 am with a pickup from your hotel in Barreal, where you will board a 4x4 jeep. We will first journey to an ancient gold mine located north of Calingasta, where you will learn about the intricate and hazardous techniques that miners used to extract significant quantities of this precious metal.

Next, we will ascend the Timbirimbas hill in our 4x4, offering breathtaking views of the Andes mountains, which majestically rise on the horizon. The journey continues as we cross the Castaño River, embracing the thrill of exploration.

Upon reaching the opposite bank, we will explore the remnants of the Castaño Nuevo mines, with their gold and silver deposits discovered in the late 19th century. These mines, though no longer operating, were bustling during the 1950s and 1960s, when over 800 homes were constructed at the mountain's base for miners and their families. We will also view the dam erected over the Castaño River gorge, which improved accessibility to this region.

Following our deep dive into the mining heritage of San Juan province, we will recharge with a delightful picada de campo—a picnic amidst the picturesque surroundings. After enjoying our meal, we will return, taking in more stunning Andean vistas along the route.

During the journey back, there will be a brief stop for a light outdoor snack. We expect to arrive back at your hotel in Barreal by 10 pm.
