Covadonga, Cangas de Onís Lakes + Lastres Day Trip
Description
If you are passionate about nature and history, this excursion to the lakes and basilica of Covadonga in Cangas de Onís is highly recommended. Embark on a stunning route along the Asturian coastline, culminating in an unforgettable experience in Asturias!
Excursion Overview
Our journey begins with a pick-up from a designated spot in the center of Oviedo. From there, we will head east across the Principality of Asturias to explore the renowned Lakes of Covadonga, a stunning group of lakes within the striking Picos de Europa National Park.
The first highlight will be the Entrelagos viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of Lake Ercina and Lake Enol. After gaining insight into the glacial history that shaped these remarkable lakes, we will proceed to visit the Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga, a neo-Romanesque structure constructed between 1877 and 1901. Here, we will delve into the historical significance of King Pelayo and the Spanish Reconquest.
Next, we will explore the Covadonga Sanctuary, where the cave sheltering the image of the Virgin, known as the Santina, is located. Our visit will also include the Royal Pantheon, the resting place of Don Pelayo and his successors from the Asturian monarchy.
Following our time at the Covadonga Sanctuary, we will travel to Cangas de Onís for a brief guided tour. Post-tour, you will have two hours of free time for lunch or to capture photos at the iconic Roman bridge of Cangas, which features the esteemed Victoria Cross, an important symbol of the Asturias region.
Our final destination will be Lastres, where we will engage in a guided exploration of its picturesque streets. Finally, we will conclude our day and return to the original meeting point after approximately 12 hours.
