Cuban Revolution Experience
"We were born in a free country that our parents bequeathed to us, and the Island will first sink into the sea before we consent to be the slaves of anyone." These powerful words by Fidel Castro embody the essence of the Cuban Revolution, which unfolded in the 1950s. This tour invites you to immerse yourself in the rich history surrounding this significant movement, one of the most analyzed historical events of the 20th century.
Our journey begins at the Casa Granda Hotel in Céspedes Park. Here, we will take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba before stepping into a classic vintage car. This vehicle will transport us to an essential site that offers insights into the city's political landscape during the mid-twentieth century: the Palace of the Provincial Government, now home to the Emilio Bacardi Museum.
Next, we will visit the Moncada Barracks, a military installation that was assaulted on July 26, 1953, by revolutionaries opposing the Batista regime. Led by Fidel Castro, his brother Raúl, and Abel Santamaría, the attack, despite its failure, instigated the 26th of July Movement, which played a crucial part in the eventual success of the Cuban Revolution in Havana on January 1, 1960.
During this visit, we will also explore the 26th of July History Museum, where the permanent exhibits will deepen our understanding of both the barracks' history and the broader Revolutionary context. Following our museum tour, we will board a horse-drawn carriage that will take us to the serene Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.
Upon our arrival at the cemetery, we will pay respects at the tomb of Fidel Castro, situated alongside the mausoleum of José Martí. Finally, as our enlightening experience concludes, we will return to our starting point in the vintage car after an engaging four-hour journey.
