Description
Explore the historical richness of Salamanca through a guided visit to its most significant sites, including Plaza Mayor, the Old and New Cathedrals, and one of Europe's ancient universities.
Tour Overview
We will gather at the specified time under the clock in Plaza Mayor, situated in the vibrant center of Salamanca. Once we are all assembled, we'll commence our exploration of this remarkable city.
Our journey will kick off in Plaza Mayor, frequently regarded as one of the most stunning squares in Spain. While we take in its beauty, we’ll delve into how Salamanca gained prominence during the Spanish Empire, including some intriguing anecdotes related to the square itself. Following this, we'll proceed to the adjacent Plaza del Corrillo, where traces of Salamanca’s medieval past still resonate.
Next, we will visit the renowned Casa de las Conchas, an impressive Gothic structure embellished with an array of carved shells. Just nearby, we will be captivated by the grand façade of La Clerecía, a magnificent Baroque building currently home to the Pontifical University of Salamanca.
Moving on, we'll reach the historic Patio de Escuelas Mayores, the site of the University of Salamanca. Did you know it is one of the oldest universities in Europe? Here, you’ll uncover intriguing tales from its illustrious history and seek out the esteemed Frog of Salamanca hidden within the elaborate Plateresque design.
We’ll also visit the tranquil Patio de Escuelas Menores, where we can enter to admire the Sky of Salamanca, a captivating ceiling mural illustrating a celestial map from the Renaissance period.
Our adventure will then take us to Plaza de Juan XXIII, where we will learn about the origins of the Old Cathedral, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture. A short walk later, we will stand in awe at the imposing New Cathedral in Plaza de Anaya, which beautifully combines Gothic and Baroque styles.
After a tour duration of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, we will wrap up at Plaza de Anaya. Before bidding farewell, the guide will offer valuable suggestions for dining and refreshments, allowing you to continue savoring Salamanca’s charms during your stay.
