Lanín Volcano Hike
Description
The Lanín volcano, straddling the border of Argentina and Chile, is renowned as one of the notable peaks in the Andes. On this trekking excursion, you have the opportunity to explore either its northern or southern face.
Available Options
Upon your reservation, you may select between the trekking routes detailed below. Both options include hotel pickup in San Martín de los Andes and a return transfer, along with the guidance of a knowledgeable trekking expert certified by the Lanin National Park.
Hike to the South Face (10 hours)
We will set out from San Martín de los Andes to Puerto Canoa, positioned along the banks of Lake Huechulafquen. This trek involves a 10-hour journey of moderate difficulty towards the south face of the Lanín Volcano.
The initial section of the trail leads us through a forest filled with coihues and ñires, where we will navigate some gentle inclines. Our route will take us to another stunning natural area, where we can listen to the flowing sounds of the Ruca Leufú stream. Here, the trail begins to ascend more steeply. We will follow the stream's edge towards the southern flank of the Lanín Volcano, where we will be rewarded with an impressive view!
As we progress, the terrain becomes increasingly arid and rocky, offering glimpses of the glacier at the volcano's south face. This marks a perfect spot to pause and enjoy a meal you’ve brought, all while taking in the surroundings. After refreshing ourselves, we will retrace our steps back to our starting point before heading back to San Martín de los Andes.
- Schedule: this hike is conducted on Wednesdays
Hike to the North Face (8 hours)
This route, characterized by its high difficulty and lasting 8 hours, begins in the vicinity of the Turbio River, located within the Lanin National Park at an elevation of 1100 metres (3608 feet). Here, we will traverse a lenga forest, where the diverse Patagonian avifauna, including the notable giant woodpecker, can be observed.
Continuing our ascent along the north face of the Lanín, we will reach a vast clearing that reveals the majestic view of the volcano. Our final push to the summit takes us along the trail known as Espina de Pescado (Fishbone), showcasing remnants from the last glaciation. The effort will prove worthwhile as we arrive at the BIM 26 mountain refuge, a military outpost at an altitude of 2,300 metres (7545 feet).
At the refuge, you may enjoy more of the provisions you’ve packed while soaking in the vistas of the Lanín Volcano and Lake Tromen. We will then descend back to the base of the volcano and proceed by road to return to San Martín de los Andes.
