Description

This hiking expedition on the Matanuska Glacier is designed for the seasoned adventurer seeking one of the foremost challenging treks in southern Alaska. Prepare to be captivated by the pristine scenery within the glacier's lesser-explored regions!

Trip Details

Our journey commences at 38100 Glenn Highway, where we’ll assemble and equip ourselves for an exploration of one of Alaska’s most accessible glacier systems.

Following a brief 10-minute drive, we’ll arrive at the trailhead of the Matanuska Glacier. With our adventure set in motion, we'll traverse over 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) of diverse glacial landscape, marked by steep inclines, pressure ridges, and rugged terrain.

As we navigate toward the area referred to as Ice Falls, we enter the majestic heart of the Matanuska Glacier, where the formations become increasingly intricate and less frequented. Interesting fact: this glacier acts like a solid river, advancing as much as 30 centimeters (12 inches) each day!

During our trek, we will encounter seracs, deep crevasses, and moulins, which are vertical shafts formed by melting waters. As we go, we will investigate the ice’s stratigraphy, where each layer tells the story of thousands of years of geological heritage.

In certain areas, we will engage in straightforward rappelling techniques to descend small features sculpted by thermal erosion.

The highlight of this journey? We will be part of a small group consisting of no more than 4 participants, allowing us to tailor our pace according to our fitness levels and to closely examine lichens, cryophilic algae, and other microorganisms thriving in this seemingly harsh environment.

After a rewarding 6-hour hiking experience, we’ll return to our vehicle and make our way back to the starting point. Until our next adventure!
