Description
If you're a theatre enthusiast visiting London, this walking tour through the West End Theatreland is an exceptional choice! During the excursion, you will explore the surroundings of London's most renowned theatre venues and delve into the history of the West End. Are you ready to traverse over 300 years of theatrical heritage?
Tour Overview
We will meet at the arranged time in front of the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Once everyone is assembled, the guided walking tour of the West End will commence, revealing the behind-the-scenes secrets of legendary actors, directors, set creators, architects, and the iconic productions that have influenced British theatre. Expect to experience theatrical wonders around every corner!
Our first destination will be the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the oldest theatre site in London. Here, stories of drama, royal connections, and even chilling legends will come to life. Following this, we will visit the Lyceum Theatre, famously associated with Bram Stoker, where the acclaimed musical The Lion King currently graces the stage.
Next, we will proceed to the Savoy Theatre, where we will discuss the groundbreaking contributions of Richard D'Oyly Carte, pivotal to the creation of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. This influential partnership set the foundation for the globally recognized musical industry we enjoy today!
Continuing our walking adventure, we will arrive at the Vaudeville Theatre, where the story of a tragic incident resulting from an actor feud will be revealed. We will also take a moment outside the refined Garrick Theatre, known for its focus on melodrama in its formative years.
We will then take a moment to appreciate the St. Martin's Theatre, which hosts Agatha Christie's historic production The Mousetrap. As our journey progresses, we will stroll along Shaftesbury Avenue, the vibrant epicenter of Theatreland, where you will encounter even more of London's prestigious theatres.
Our exploration of the West End will conclude near His Majesty's Theatre, situated close to Trafalgar Square. This venue is famously known for The Phantom of the Opera, the renowned musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber. After two enriching hours learning about the roots of the West End, we will bid farewell. So long, farewell!
