Tour of Malé & Villimale
Description
For those seeking to fully immerse themselves in the unique culture of the Maldives, participating in a guided exploration of Malé alongside a visit to the island of Villimale offers an opportunity to witness the everyday lives of the locals.
Exploration of Malé & Villimale
Your adventure begins at the port of Malé at 10 am, where we'll take a brief stroll towards the city's oldest school. Notably, Malé boasts an impressive literacy rate of 98%.
Following our visit to the school, our next destination is the Malé Friday Mosque, the second largest mosque in the area. As we take in its stunning architecture, our knowledgeable guide will share stories about notable figures interred here.
Continuing our tour, we'll stop at the Royal Garden Café to sample traditional black tea. Afterward, we’ll have the chance to appreciate the 3rd November Memorial. Are you aware of the significance behind this monument?
Our journey will then lead us to Sultan Park, now referred to as Rasrani Park. This lush area houses the National Museum, and there will be an option for you to enter and delve into the rich history of the Maldives (entrance fees not included).
As we make our way back to the port, we'll stop near the Islamic Centre to explore the role of Islam in Malé's culture. Our route will also take us past the legendary Independence Square (Jumhooree Maidhaan), which is steeped in the city's political history, offering a wealth of knowledge.
Next, we’ll visit a local fish market, where you can interact with residents and gain insight into the island's way of life. This will be followed by a delightful Maldivan lunch that will surely satisfy your appetite.
Refreshed, we’ll take a taxi to the ferry terminal, where we'll embark on a boat ride to Villimale. Once a prison island, it serves as a serene escape from urban life.
During our approximately one-hour walk on Villimale, you’ll learn about the distinct lifestyle on this peaceful island, far removed from the city’s pace. We’ll also meet with representatives from a local NGO called Save the Beach, who will discuss their important work in preserving the island’s natural beauty.
Our experience will culminate with a visit to a local café to savor a traditional hedika, a variety of pastries paired with black tea. After this delightful treat, we’ll return to the ferry and make our way back to Malé, where we expect to arrive around 5 pm.
