Šargan Eight Train
Description
On this Šargan Eight train ride, you will experience a journey reminiscent of 20th-century trains while enjoying stunning landscapes.
The Šargan Eight, Europe's Narrowest Train
The Šargan Eight train was operational from 1925 to 1974, connecting Belgrade with Sarajevo and facilitating access to the mountain of Mokra Gora. Although it ceased operations in 1974, restoration discussions began around 20 years later. The restored train line between Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi resumed service in the summer of 2004, covering a distance of 9.6 miles (15.5 kilometers).
The train's track is uniquely shaped like an 8 and includes a complex of 22 tunnels and 5 bridges, with the longest tunnel measuring 5,465 feet (1,666 meters). This design was necessary due to the steep inclines of over 984 feet (300 meters).
During the 2.5-hour journey, you will depart from Mokra Gora in old wooden interior wagons that reflect the early 20th-century style. Upon reaching Šargan Vitasi, you will have about 30 minutes to explore the platform displaying old locomotives. The return journey will include five brief stops for photos and to take in the impressive views.
This journey on the narrowest train in Europe promises to showcase lush valleys and traditional wooden houses. Experience this unique adventure!
