Nemocón Salt Mines Day Trip + Checua Desert Hiking

Embark on an exciting day excursion to the Nemocón Salt Mine, a stunning underground site dating back to the 19th century. Additionally, we will explore the Checua Desert, ensuring a thrilling journey!

Activity Overview

We'll start our journey at the designated meeting point, setting off towards the captivating Checua Desert and the remarkable Nemocón Salt Mines. Let’s begin!

After gathering at the central park of Nemocón, you will have around an hour to enjoy breakfast and recharge before we kick off the hiking adventure.

Once you're ready, our hike to the Checua Desert, known as “Tatacoita,” will commence. This easy trail spans approximately 7 km (4.1 mi), and along the way, we will share intriguing stories about the history of this unique dry landscape.

As we traverse the Checua Desert, you'll have the opportunity to observe striking rock formations, reddish earth canyons, vibrant scenery, and crevices reminiscent of a western film. This will surely be an unforgettable experience!

Upon returning to Nemocón, we will reward our efforts with a delightful lunch. Options include trout, gratin chicken breast, chicken fillets topped with melted cheese, or BBQ ribs, accompanied by a delicious ajiaco, a traditional soup, and a desser. Enjoy your meal!

Post-lunch, we will take a brief stroll through the charming historic center of Nemocón, exploring its cute streets and colonial architecture, a testament to the cultural wealth of the area. The next highlight of our tour will be the Nemocón Salt Mine.

With a rich history spanning over 200 years, the salt mine offers a chance to traverse tunnels adorned with salt crystals, admire reflection ponds, and enter naturally lit chambers designed to accentuate their structure.

Throughout our visit, insights will be shared about the miners' lives within these underground galleries and the methods of salt extraction employed during their shifts.

After about 2 hours, we will conclude our journey with our companions in Nemocón and begin our return to Bogotá, expected to arrive between 11 to 12 hours later.

• Tour departing from Nemocón: we will meet at the main park at 8 am.
