Description
Newcastle boasts a rich tapestry of imposing fortifications, historic marketplaces, and imposing libraries that reflect its vibrant past. Experience this heritage through an engaging guided walking tour.
Tour Overview
We'll commence our journey at St Andrew's Church, recognized as Newcastle's oldest place of worship. This 12th-century structure will serve as our meeting point to kick off the guided exploration of the city.
Just a short distance away, we will encounter the remnants of the city wall, once regarded as the largest in England. While appreciating its historical significance, we will delve into tales of valiant jousts, sieges, and the legendary figure of Harry Hotspur. Who was he, and what legacy did he leave behind?
Our next stop will be Blackfriars, established in 1239 as a Dominican priory. We’ll discuss the impact of its Dominican monks, whose endeavors led to substantial wealth and notable influence.
Proceeding onward, we will arrive at St Nicholas' Cathedral, a structure that epitomizes the city’s economic advancement during the Medieval period. Nearby, we will pause in front of the Guildhall, which occupies a location granted a Royal Charter to merchants since 1216.
As we move forward, we will also visit Trinity House, the guild of sailors that was instrumental during the Middle Ages. Their principal role included overseeing navigation from Whitby to Berwick. Stay alert for fascinating insights, as this maritime route was pivotal for the city’s growth!
Our journey will culminate at Newcastle Castle, where the impressive façade and the storied Black Gate will captivate you. We will share intriguing anecdotes about its significance and how it contributed to the city’s identity.
