Paris Archaeological Crypt Ticket
Description
Delve into the archaeological richness of Île de la Cité with an entry to the Paris Archaeological Crypt. This journey takes you beneath the renowned Notre Dame, showcasing an exhibition that honors the contributions of Victor Hugo and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc to the cathedral's legacy.
Ticket Information
Access to the Paris Archaeological Crypt grants you a chance to explore the excavated remnants of Île de la Cité.
Situated on the esplanade of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a landmark steeped in history, the crypt highlights its evolution from obscurity to prominence. A pivotal role in this transformation was played by the writer Victor Hugo, alongside the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, during the 19th century.
Since its reopening in September 2020, the crypt features the exhibition titled 'Notre-Dame de Paris: from Victor Hugo to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc'. Visitors will uncover how Hugo's literary work, particularly the novel Notre-Dame de Paris from 1831, spearheaded an advocacy for the cathedral's restoration, which was severely deteriorated at that time.
The exhibition also explores the extensive restoration efforts led by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc between 1844 and 1864. Within the crypt, various models of the Notre Dame are on display, emphasizing the importance of preserving this architectural gem, especially following the devastating fire on April 15.
Moreover, visitors can enrich their understanding of the cathedral's history through the film Notre-Dame Eterna, available within the Archaeological Crypt.
